The History of First Baptist Church of Roxana:

According to the Church records, the first meeting for the purpose of organizing a Baptist Church in Roxana was held on September 28, 1921. It was done under the superintendent of the Southern District of the Illinois State Baptist Convention. First Baptist Church was an outgrowth of a community-wide Sunday School which met in the school house on Old Edwardsville Road in Roxana.

Lots were purchased at the corner of Central and Tydeman Avenues in early 1922, and a basement building was constructed. The first service was held in the new basement on December 3, 1922. J.A. Wilson was called as the first pastor. In 1926, Rev. Earl D. Sims was called as pastor of the Church. He began a construction program to complete an auditorium on the already existing basement. This was completed by September 24, 1927. This is also the date that is marked on the painting of the Church baptistery which was done by Mrs. Sims. The building was expanded to its present size under the direction of Pastor L.E. Mustain in 1954.

In 1937, the Church severed its connection with the Illinois Baptist Convention and purchased the deed to the property from the convention at a cost of $500. Later the same year, the Church voted to join in fellowship with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches. Our church has continued that relationship to this day.

First Baptist Church has remained true to the teachings of the Scriptures and to the integrity of the preaching of the Word of God. Many people throughout the years have sacrificed, worked, and prayed to have an independent, Bible-believing, and Christ centered church in the Village of Roxana, Illinois.
